| IANANS (I Am Not A Nuclear Scientist), but I don't think there are many, if any, materials radioactive enough to kill you instantly. I'm pretty sure as long as you're wearing protective clothing and the like, you're not in immediate danger. If you inhale some of it, on the other hand, you're pretty well fscked, but even then it takes a bit of time.
It really depends on the material. Some of them are radioactive enough to make you sick pretty quickly. However, the people who're doing this are fanatics. They're not too concerned about their own well being.
