Football muttering and cursing thread by bugarup2002-06-11 07:32:42
would like to be contrary..... by sumbusch 2002-06-11 09:03:56
but you make too much sense....the nationalism and flag-waving is the thing that really bothers me, and we've really had an excess of that nonsense here in US lately, much of it a reaction to the 9/11 terror -- if you don't have the knowledge or skills to do anything useful, you can still demonstrate your patriotism by putting up lots of flags, mostly made in China...
now THAT'S a real demonstration of patriotism! My dear wife wanted to get a flag, but I insisted that we at least get one made in our own country... and I would never criticize anyone who does not want to be a part of the flag-waving silliness.

Soccer/football has never held any appeal for me; nor has the pugilism on ice that some call hockey (the Olympics form of hockey is somewhat better, because the officials don't allow excessive violence and the skaters then have to compete on the basis of SKILL!)

I like baseball a lot better (does anyone remember George Carlin's comic bit about the differences between baseball and football?) but I try to keep it in perspective.... my favorite team winning the world series will not usher in a new golden age, world peace, or anything like that...
