/me kicks IE - this is the third time I've written this post.
Honestly, when I installed Slack for the first time, I knew rm, ls, and pico. That's it. Sure, I had some trouble learning my way around my box, but there's plenty of online resources to help you out.
Besides, hand compiling isn't that bad - for the most part it's `./configure; make; su -c "make install"`. Now where you get into fun stuff is when you try things like php. For my current ./configure options see here. CFLAGS are also fun to play with - I just changed my default ones to "-march=pentiumpro -funroll-loops -fexpensive-optimizations -O6 -malign-jumps=2 -malign-loops=2"... fun stuff. I hate it when Makefiles override things though (digging through the kernel makefile is fun for the whole family!).
But back to the point... I honestly feel that installing a distro that coddles you is among the worst things you can do. It prevents you from ever learning how your system works.

I'd consider compiling without a Makefile | by beez | 2002-06-11 08:46:46 |
