I agree with Kickstart, if the newbie has never laid hands on a Unix box before, or has never written programs. I'm guessing that LaktoseOtto is in this category. However, if the user really wants to get into the 'guts' of the OS, Slackware is, IMHO, the best choice as it does not try to hide anything from the user. Slack is the OS I used to learn Linux back in '95/'96, when I really had no other choice. I still use it for servers.
