These guys don't play football in their spare time, it's their way of making a living. How much they get paid is pure economics; 10M will tune in to watch David Beckham play, so the club can sell advertising space at a price reflecting the numbers in the audience and make a bigger profit, so he (Beckham) can demand a higher salary in turn. The question here is not whether you would take a lower-paying job to do something you love, but whether you would turn down a higher-paying one out of principle. I know I wouldn't, so why should footballers?
