I love that game. Really, I do. But boy, did it ever get my computer into trouble.
Ok, the story goes like this: Back when my Athlon TB 800 was still kind of new I was just going "woo!" over my 20 GB hard disk, bigger than any disk I'd ever had access to before. (Lame, huh?) So I installed all the games I had on the "full install" option. The computer took it all without complaining. I was in paradise. Until Baldur's Gate 2.
The first two times, it locked up during the installation. The third time it seemed OK, and even ran. For about two hours. Then it locked up the computer again. I press reset, and to my astonishment my computer goes "WIN.COM not found".
Yippy skippy, reinstall. The problem was that the Registry was now børked, so I had to reinstall all the games (the old savegames still were all there). But this time I was wiser. I installed BG2 first (Bioware, thou art forgiven), figuring that I was on kind of pristine ground again. Clever, huh? I thought so, too. Especially since it worked without problems for three days. Then it locked up the computer, and Windows wouldn't reinstall. Eeep.
Format C: it was, then. All those saved games, gone with the magnetic head ... not to mention all those files I'd downloaded from the 'net ... (I didn't have backups because the Zip drive somehow refused to work with my computer, and I didn't have much experience with CD-Rs)
I didn't touch BG 2 from then on ... until my recent re-reformat. Now it's been running for several weeks without any flaws. It's the calm before the storm, but I'm going to enjoy it. ;) |
