I just bought all 4 of the books. Hopefully the royalties will reach the $36 you're asking.
I worked in the MIS dept. of a marketing firm for a year (all I could stand) and, if it really comes down to it, have a few suggestions that I picked up that you could use.
As I'm sure has been suggested to you before, you can always set up a membership section (no ads, etc.) and a section with obnoixious marketing that will cover as much of you costs as you need.
The comments section is also something that could be used. (Marketing slang is "leveraged" I believe. Turning more nouns into verbs.) You can either restrict it to the membership section completely or only allow members to post and everyone to read.
Membership "credits" for buying UF merchandise is another method that some of the pages I wrote used. For example, since I bought all of the books, I get the price of one year's subscription reduced. This requires coordinating a little with the book publishers, but O'Reilly is probably one of the best to be with if you need anything techie done. (Who's Plan Nine?)
One rather ironic method that was used a lot is giving people free stuff for signing up and simply jacking the membership fee up to your cost. For example, membership is $36 now and the base cost of a T-Shirt with Dust Puppy on it is $4 but being sold for $10. The membership goes up to $40, but they get a free shirt that they can only get from UF. It's jacking the membership cost up $4, but they think they're getting a $10 shirt free. Don't ask me why it works, but it does.
The idea here is to allow people to still get the comic for free; however, this is America - it revolves around the dollar. Sad but true. We have our problems but good luck finding anywhere better to live.
