That was no rant? Gee, I need practice then. *g*
But seriously, not only the higher educated people would benefit.
Imagine these scenarios:
Maria, age 45;
When arriving she can not get a job because she only knows spanish.
After about a year learning a little english by watching TVshows she gets a job as a cleaning lady at a supermarket for mimimum wage.
After another 2 years of learning english she is also working the cashregisters and helping out in the storage rooms, making about twice as much as she did as a cleaner.
Eduardo, age 37;
Gets a job at a construction site hawling lumber for minimum wage.
After 3 years of learning english he is still doing the same job but is also getting on well with the managers since he is a good worker who is also struggling to learn new things (namely a new language).
2 years later Eduardos back is starting to give in (Hawling lumber is heavy work) and he will not be able to continue it much longer. However, since he is held in good regard at his workplace he does not have to quit and go on welfare but can stay with the constructionfirm doing other things. Thereby keep getting paychecks and not leaning back on society.
And as a finale to that,
Carlos, age 32;
Comes to America and can not get a job because he only speaks spanish. So instead he gets welfare.
Carlos does not think to look into his other options because he is already getting an income so 20 years later he is still on welfare, and also still equally unaware of where the welfare money comes from.
Carlos has a son, Mano, who goes to university and learns all about the finansial system in america. He goes home to his father and explains to him where the money comes from but alas, it is now too late for Carlos to get a job and repay the society that has done so much good for him. (i.e. Provided him with money for 20 years for doing nothing.)
Lets see... My point? Right...
That would be that if the people who come to america are not educated in what their possibilities and chances are they will simply hold on to the ones that are handed to them (i.e. welfare and medicaid) and will never even try for the oportunities in worklife etc that are available to anyone in america, simply because they are not aware of how to pursue them.
Yes, it should be a free choice if one wants to get into the higher studies or not, but if the people who come into the country are never made aware of their choices and possibilities, there is a high risk that the chances will never be taken. |
