i think perhaps the reason you are getting the shell error message and not your error message is that perl has to completely evaluate the system call to see if it needs to look at the second half of the statement (that bit after the &&) and since the shell barfs out that error message - perl prints it to STDERR before looking at the second half of the statement. not knowing what you are trying to do makes it a bit more difficult to come up with a suggested solution. you might try something like: open (SHELL,"$_") || die "Cannot open $_: $!";
