here things are handled diffrently. First off any person in canada no matter which country they've came here from must be here for x amount of months before they can collect benifits.(and at least in bc it makes them go through quite a process and once you get them they review you, keep tabs on you, offer education etc to get you off of it) In that time they must find a way to support themselves via family, friends, church, of work visa. If they are illegal immigrants they end up having to stay at immigration til they have a hearing and their needs are met while there afik. To work here usually we have to provide a SIN number, home address, and speak at least one native language. Also many jobs require at least a high school diploma and some refrences.

Be it US or Canada unless we are native we all came from somewhere else. Often our ancesters or family seeking refuge from a prior homeland that was worn torn, had a differing quality of life, etc. My dad came here as a boy from england not long after they had to deal with the depression. My exhusbands family came here after the communist take over because they were told get out or die. They were luckier than some other chinese aquaintances we have whose families delt with something akin to american slavery of blacks. I have aquaintances that left the middle east. Though they miss their family they don't miss the war. They hear that here we do not fight like there and life is better so they told me.

I can see some fleeing their homelands in desperation for whatever reason. If they could work depending on where they've gone I'm sure they'd do it. They have their pride. Perhaps a few might try to cling to the system but more probably try to work and have a life for them and their families. Then to get themselves legal. Contrary to popular believe I think their own people living in whatever country they've illegally entered. Wont treat them necisarily that well. The chinese communities here from what I've heard from my exhusbands family... disliked people comming in illegally. They felt it put a bad face on the community. However some did hide them or refused to talk on them to avoid public notice on the community. Also churches would help them. Often they can't return home for whatever reason.

We are wealthy nations and there must be some way to help thease people that is some compromise. Yes you need to deal with country, state, provincial, county, etc finances. But having a heart, compassion, listening, etc might prove more effective than approaching with anger and shouting "GET OUT." But then again to me we are all beautiful like a rainbow... being diverse and of many colours. We can enrich and learn from eachother if we give eachother a chance.

I found the comment on "whiteness" out of line for obvious reasons: 1) it is a racist(we are all the same colour inside)/hate oriented comment, 2) All of mankind has contributed to it's own development(if it was isolated to one race we'd of stagnated), and 3) many people are of mixed orgins(many people have white or other races in them despite what they look like). Perhaps they'd learn a hard lesson about comments on "whiteness" and other supremicy things if they lived in another culture. Though I've never been racist I have lived in the chinese culture before (for about 6 yrs) due to my exhusband. While many weren't racist several were(many that were didn't hate whites but they disliked alot of other races). Also if thease people looked into their family tree far enough they might get a suprise and find out they aren't so racially pure... they are of mixed race at some point(or just mixed group culturally/religiously)
