The Obvious Solution by slacktime2002-06-07 10:17:25
                      Is it a solution? by nin_man2002-06-07 10:32:18
You are right... by slacktime 2002-06-07 10:51:05
In fact I didn't say that I advocated the solution.

Puerto Rico has no motivation to become a state. They would face higher taxes and more government than they now have and their representation would be little if any better.

There would be a vast difference if mexico came in and formed several states. The population is significant enough to make a mighty impact on our elections. The number of representatives and senators created would have a profound effect on our house and senate. Would there be hostility created among those who fear the loss in power and influence? I believe so. Would racists and bigots throughout the country howl? I'm sure they would. Would it be good for our country in the long run and theirs? Hmmm, not sure, but it could effect some good change in both countries.

Would they (the people of Mexico) really want to do it? I doubt it and it was not really meant to be taken as a serious suggestion, for in general I think the people of Mexico love their country and prefer to remain a separate country from ours.

I also think that as good citizens of this world we should do more of trying to look at the global impact of our national policies as Tigermouse suggested in another part of this thread rather than the national. But I'm also realist enough to know that it's not likely to happen.
