I doubt it would *really* be a flood, especially in the UK which doesn't have any land borders to speak of.
I'm not suggesting we should ship them in, but we need a system for people who turn up at the airport and say, "Let me in, I want to work".
All the info I have suggests that immigration is, on balance, good for mature societies - just think where we'd be without Indian food, not to mention the possibility of doing something about our population decline (now ABSOLUTE for native western-europeans and north americans) which is going to see the younger generations (that's US!) working longer and harder to support our ageing ancestors.
BTW - Latest estimates in the UK suggest that soemone who is now 30 will need to work until 75 (instead of 60 as at present) to afford to retire... |
