Take a few VERY deep breaths, count to 1000 (10 just won't cut it), and THINK.
WHY the heck are you so outraged? Are you the cop? No.
Let's take your analogy and see why you're mistaken:
Cop pulls Egaeus over for speeding. E says, "I'm sorry, officer, but my house is on fire and I felt I had to speed." You are the guy with the "Rodney King got off easy" sticker filming the whole incident screaming "impound the car, lock him up, and fine him $5000".
According to Egaeus, this is "justification". It is implied that he would do it again if the circumstances were as dire.
According to you, Egaeus could only be "mouthing off". Only the worst of the Highway Patrol would agree with you.
The cop will still give him a ticket, but he will not get his panties in a bunch about it. Why not put on your birthday suit for a while?
