still stands. I know far more than one person who has done this. As in most debate, I gave an example of a class of argument for my proposition. Please don't fall into the trap of assuming an example is all there is.
I am sure, if you think things over, you'll find you know several people who have mastered a language as an adult. There are also plenty who cannot, or haven't bothered. I have no pity for them, and there is no reason I should support them in any way other than helping them to learn the language of their adopted nation. And then only if they immigrated legally.
It was the "they're happy, leave 'em alone" statement that really sparked my sarcasm. It truly does sound like things those <heroically refraining from obscenities> crackers say. I have to fight racism in myself when my upbringing causes certain ingrained beliefs to surface. It's my belief that everyone either fights this, or agrees to it, as there is racism everywhere.
People must be made to stand on their own. The desire to "help" so often creates dependency, as witness our inner-city problems right now. |
