The meaning of the word 'Social' in my post was this: Interaction with the native population of the country one has moved to. I still agree that English should be taught in the schools. It is then up to the student how well the language is learned. In Sweden English is one of the scheduled subjects that everyone takes. In higher levels me and my peers had the oportunity to choose between the 'easy' and 'difficult' class. For me this worked out fairly well, and I assume for others aswell. (Granted, not everyone uses the language now, and most of these are very reluctant to even try to say any phrases.) Maybe I have a romantic view of things but I believe that we can get far with good intentions. To require english of not only the growing immigrants but also the adult ones would (hopefully) give them a nudge in the direction of trying for the possibilities they came for. Any time a person moves to a foreign country to work a language course should be required. That does not go only for anyone who moves to an english speaking country but for everyone. End rant... Logging off hoping that made sense...
