Living in Europe, i just NEED a few languages, one of which i called "english". In english (the natural language of England, of course) the paper thingy that's implied in this strip is called a "cheque". It's the same word in dutch, french, german ... only americans shortened it and called it "a check". But CHECKing is the last action don on a cheque: i used to PAY with them, or collect money, but the "CHECK" on them is really minimal:
- does it contain A signature ?
- yes of course
- Is it the signature of the owner of this chequeing account?
- Who cares? Do you really think the guy who stole this bothered to counterfeit a signature ?
- But this sig says "John Silver", whilst the name on the cheque is "Elton John"
- OK, he missed a bit of the name, do you still want this 8.000 dollars, or are you suspicious? Well, this bank gets the money somewhere, and the real E.J. didn't protest ... no he doesn't have an account in THIS bank, why do you ask?
So the word "check" is misleading, or worse. |
