has to be my favorite painting of all time.

The story my art teacher always told me was this. A conflit between to sides had wages long enough (their names I forget). In an attempt to save lives, an agreement is struck. Two groups of three brothers will fight, each group representing their respective side. To the side that is successful, they are called the victors. The group in this picture are the brothers of the Horatii family, and that is their father holding the swords. To the side, greiving women are present. I beleive two of them are wives of the brothers, while one who is especially greiving is their sister, who is also in love with a brother who is fighting on the other side of the army.
I forget the term for the method used by David, but if you look closely, the cracks in the tiles, and the cracks in the wall, and the forward/backward edges of the tops of the collums all point to one specific point: the swords in the hands of the father.
Or at least that's what my art teacher always told me. I was trying to find a write up about it somewhere on the 'net but all I could find were things about policital radicalness and things of that sort. So he could've been fooling us the entire time. But that's my favorite work of art. :) |
