Its hallucinatory quality combined with the streaks of light among the dark make it strangely compelling. It is as though Van Gogh was trying to exorcise demons with a brush. When I saw the actual paiting years ago at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, I stood in front of it moved to tears. The pain radiated out from it.
