Video Card Question (PCI) by pecosdave 2002-06-07 04:45:24
I have a Compaq Deskpro, originally a Pentium Pro 200 that I put a PII 333 Overdrive chip in (still socket 8). The upgrade to MMX helps on quite a few things but doesn't make a difference over the old 200 on a lot of others, it's still as solid as a rock. It has a 128 MB of RAM (SIMMs 60ns) and I was thinking it would make a decent machine for playing Unreal Tournament. I'm sure it can do better than my Celeron 450 notebook with the Mobile Rage given the right video card.

It will play it as is with the current Matrox card, but I want the best this system can handle. I know that about a year and a half ago the VooDoo 5 was the best PCI card even though 3Dfx was long gone it still beat out the best offerings from nVidia and ATI (AGP wise VooDoo was not longer even a consideration). That was a year and half ago. Is there anything that will run on such a machine that beats out the VooDoo offerings?

I know PCI has pretty much fallen by the wayside but it's such a good solid machine it's going to be put to use as my girlfriends computer. She mostly MUDs and browses the web, but she can let go of that for a few hours of flak cannons and sniper rifles on occasion. Maybe I'll even get her hooked on it, if I'm lucky.
