Well, maybe not the best approach, but you could always come up behind them sometime, don't make a sound, make sure you're not reflecting in their computer screen. Lean close to them, and say "Hello". Very simple, very satisfying. Virtually guaranteed to scare the snot out of them. Maybe they'll get the point.
