A disc is a circular thing in British English, a CD is thus a Compact Disc (so says the relevant standard, apparently), but a hard disk or a floppy disk is actually short for "diskette" (that's what I've always been told anyway) so it gets the American spelling.

The (British) BBC Micro OS would accept either spelling (*DISC or *DISK) to switch it from tape to disk mode :-)
