... but since I'm a heathen (pagan, if you prefer), I'd never want to be referred to as a rabbi, for fear that it caused offence to someone or other.

To explain: my parents-in-law converted to Judaism between 15 and 18 years ago, and I have a fair degree of respect for those that follow that particular religion. Given this, I try and avoid causing any offence to members of it, and hearing a heathen called a rabbi might do so.

(In fact, I try not to offend members of any religion: I figure religion is essentially a very personal matter, and personal matters/opinions are not things that I wish to cause offence over...)
