punctuation and grammar are optional as well...

As far as the chat rooms go, you have to remember that most people are typing on the fly and not proofreading themselves... and some people just can't type at all.

It's kinda like the difference between CNN News and CB radio- consider the format/environment. Judging a whole nation's verbal skills based on a bunch of 12- and 13-year-old "l33t h4x0rs" in AOL and Yahoo chat rooms is like coming to America, seeing a street bum or two, and concluding that the entire populace must be poverty-stricken.

...and if I remember correctly, it wasn't the "American education system" that wanted Ebonics to be a part of language studies, it was just the Oakland Unified School District in California...
