I'll give you two examples of imprecision. These are just two examples...

One is the expression "carved in stone", current in the US and used to be current when I still lived in England and seemed to be current even ten years ago. This has been largely replaced in the British psyche by "cast in stone", a conflation of two distinct expressions: "cast in concrete" and "carved in stone".

The other is the failure to use the subjunctive in British English, thus losing a distinction. "I insist that he be punished" versus "I insist that he is punished".
