might that not be because American usage is accepted as the internationally-recognised version of English, whereas British authors naturally write in their native idiom? You can argue that that does mean that Americans write more precise English - but by extension, that would imply that Microsoft's modifications of existing standards, because they are used by more of the average users, are somehow superior to the standards - an attitude which incenses people like me who make all efforts possible to stick to standards, and don't necessarily have the opportunity to procure the proprietary (expensive) software needed to view the documents as Microsoft wishes them to be viewed...
