Your nitpicks really are that.

1. Of course, "average educated" was also implied for the Brits.
2. This is silly.
3. This is being disingenuous. You know very well what American means to an English-speaking person.
4. Mea culpa. Not clear. See Point 1.
5. Oh but they do. I often buy or borrow US editions of books (they are cheaper, for one thing) and I can assure you that any differences are vanishingly small.
6. My impression is based on 30 years of rewriting articles from all over the world for publication. In the case if those written in English, those by Americans generally caused less work than those from Britain.
