The Army pay was low enough that I qualified for various tax free gants (such as the Pell) and GI Bill ($650/month USD) was also tax free. Since the grants covered tuition and books, with a bit left over, the GI Bill was spending money. 4 years of college without having to get a loan or a job. Getting the GI Bill is hard work, as you have to enlist. But after working with idiot 2lt's, and majors who thought they were Gods, working in the tech industry has been a breeze.
