There is the point that since 'american' as a launguage branched of from english some few hundred years ago it has actually changed less than English has in that time. This means that the american that American's speak is closer to 'origonal' english that the english that we Brits speak.

On the other hand the fact that English and American seem to be the international launguages of choice for many has been attributed to their flexability and adaptability in picking up new words from other launguages.
