On the topic of moddable words... by adiplomat2002-06-03 22:02:05
  Simple reasons by Kickstart2002-06-03 22:16:38
ah. I am enlightened by nawft 2002-06-03 22:35:00
I agree about them not needing to be used.

I wondered about the "*"s myself. I thought that if swearing was a no-no then perhaps that would be too. I see the reason for preferring * over no *. But I think he's saying that if you are not allowed to use the full word you should not be allowed to use such a poorly censored version.
While it's true the censoring does keep out the people from searches for such things, does it really protect the innocent little FYOS?

On yet another hand, we are not exactly in a bible chat room or some such place. As such our thoughts do not have to be 100% pure. It is out of respect for the youths that visit that we do not post swear words. It is silly to expect us to be nothing but hug hug love love teddy bear and pink tutu talk around here.
WE don't want to make people think that only discussions about the latest barbie or whatever are acceptable. However the moddable words are not to be said.
I think the asterisked out words were the compromise made to achieve the balance that all mods strive for.

I think that if the majority of the letters are blocked (leaving enough for only the already naughty minded to figure it out) that it does not violate anything sufficiently to mod. Even if only a few letters are blocked I can't get worked up enough to feel it is something to mod.
I DO feel that putting such words in subject line is worse than putting it in the post. That's because it is far more visible and something that was already very grey starts looking black pretty fast at that point.

The problem with saying things like that is that you will find people abusing the rules. Posting things that are so close to stepping over the line but can't quite be modded based on such standards.
