Question for the guys. by Sehmket2002-06-03 21:05:13
partial answer is by whybird 2006-11-19 12:55:59
physiological. There was an article on New Scientist (who's server doesn't seem to be responding right now) recently about some research into social factors actually affecting testosterone levels. The researchers think they've shown that behaviour patterns such as marriage and children actually lower testosterone levels. This is a biological mechanism that allows for monogamy and stable families, they speculate.

of course, taking for granted is not entirely explained by this - I think we largely don't realise the extent to which we do it, and how that might make our SO feel.
