1. It does not require a year - I got mine in 2 months.
2. MCSE+I and $1.50 will get you a cup of coffe in most joints.
3. MCSE has little to do with building a PC.
It used to mean something. Now, it'll get you in the door, but people want practical experience...
When I was interviewing for NTAdmins, the candidates who passed the initial screening (which I am not sure what was), all came to me. I sat them in a room with an NTServer, and NTWorkstation. They had 1 hour, and 1 task: limit the size of the home directory on the NTServer.
Most people spent the entire hour, and then gave up.
The guy who got the job was the one who told me he wasn't going to waste my time, or his time because he had no idea how to do it.
