In the event of an actual emergency, the attention signal you just heard would have been followed by urgent news or government instructions, which would then be followed by a bright flash, a thermal pulse lasting 8 to 10 seconds, dramatic increase in air pressure, and winds in excess of 600 miles per hour. In this case, the government instructions would likely have been:
Loosen any constrictive clothing (neckties, collars, etc.)
Remove any sharp objects (pens, pencils) from your pockets
Remove any eyewear, being careful to put them in a safe place
Sit with your head firmly between your knees, and kiss your @$$ goodbye!
