and wanted to see what 7.3 was like.
Originally, I thought I'd try Caldera. It is next to impossible to download and burn a copy, the ISO images are corrupt 99% of the time. I bought a book with a copy included. It installed fine (the only distro to have a listing for my monitor in the setup). There is no option to boot to a console and X screwed up horribly no matter what options I chose in the setup. I gave up after a 3rd reinstall.
There is no reason to get Debian, since the stable release has been the same for how long now? Also, their installer is hard to read and package selection takes forever.
I have never managed to get Slackware installed. I tried many times, with different disks, but it always died mid-install.
As far as the lesser-known distributions go, I tried a few, but the drawbacks outweighed the advantages for me almost every time. There is a reason why they are lesser-known.
The two distros that always installed fine for me are Mandrake and Red Hat. I would like to try SuSe, since many here say good things about it, but that will have to wait until I get around to buying it. |
