He was then able to show that the rubber had lost a substantial amount of elasticity due to the change in temperature. This was the explanation for why the seal didn't hold on the booster rocket, one which NASA originally refused to accept. Feynman's public demonstration forced them to conceed on the point. Let's see if anyone is paying attention to what I've said elsewhere: What is (or was) Kusunagi-no-Tsurugi?
