The free option allows you to have your own hostname, that is yourhostname.dyndns.org. There are other domains you can pick, but you cannot make your own.
If you want a .co.uk domain, do the following:
- Create a NIC account at DynDNS.org
- Donate at least $30 to DynDNS.org (be sure to include your NIC username!). Wait for the confirmation e-mail.
NOTE: This is a one-time cost and it doesn't recur monthly/yearly/whatever. You donate $30, you get Custom DNS service for as long as you need it.
- Create the Custom DNS entry using the tools provided on dyndns.org.
- Purchase the domain from the registrar of your choice. For the DNS servers, use ns1.dyndns.org through ns5.dyndns.org.
- You will then need to set up a client to automatically update your domain each time your IP changes. I recommend ddclient, which can be put in a cron script.
The rest is a matter of setting up your server. I am running my own mail server and it works well--and most servers will hold your mail if they attempt delivery while the DNS record is being updated. Also, be sure to punch the appropriate NAT holes in your DSL router, if necessary.
