Like many things, you have to consider it, not someone trying to re-mix songs, as try to tell a story in a very creative way while using "anchors" that people are familiar with to keep them tied to the story. Judged by itself (as if all the songs were new), it was an incredible movie. Also, outside of the songs, the cinamatography, costuming, directing, choreography, acting, and did I mention cinamatography?, were incredible. Yes, the story was a trite overused, and somewhat melodramatic, and, yes, predictable, but I think the point of the movie wasn't the story so much as the cinamatography, and "what's something NEW we can do with 'standard story'?" Then again, perhaps I'm crazy.
