Help, I have a nasty problem... by DocMD2002-04-28 20:16:17
it's a small detail but makes a big difference. by arccoyote 2002-05-09 13:07:06
Is it a hang or a freeze?
When it stops, does the mouse pointer freeze?

Here's how i use the lingo. A freeze is when the mouse pointer won't move. A hang is when it will but clicking and other activities are unresponsive.

The difference is that if the mouse will move, interrrupts are still being serviced (CPU, RAM, motherboard is still functioning...)

Ok, so if the system is hanging and you can still move the mouse, it's most likely a software issue.. make sure you don't have any new background apps or services running.

If the mouse is freezing for 1-3 seconds, I'd suspect a driver or hardware issue. Overheating will cause the system to either crash or slow down (but that's Intel clock-throttling, so it's N/A for you)

Yes, a flaky ps/2 mouse can cause the whole system to freeze briefly... a keyboard can do it too, they can both cause the system to get wedged in an interrupt service.
