As part of my current job, I've been placed in charge of the Computer Science Department's portion of my college's web site. Everything in the http://bccweb.barstow.cc.ca.us/dept/compsci/ directory is now up to me. That site needs a lot of work, but that will actually be fun to me. The technical part will be no problem for me, I've been doing websites for years and have plenty of resources. What I'm concerned about is the actual content. Most of the Web sites I've done were either for clients, where the content was completely up to them and I just turned it into web pages and made it work, or my personal pages, where the content was just whatever I was interested in sharing or practice pages. I can correct the errors, dead links, out-of-date info, and bring it within HTML 4.01 & WAI compliance, but what content changes would be good? I've looked at a few similar pages for other colleges, but nothing seems very interesting. They just had the basic schedule and course description static pages. I would love to hear content suggestions for a community college computer science department web site from any interested UFies. Please take a look at it and let me know what you think would be a good idea. Keep in mind, I only have control over the pages in the .../compsci/ directory.
I've also been offered the Computer Club's Web site, but OH MY WORD does that site need a lot of work. It looks like its last partial update was in 2000, and it was not done well. I've already got quite a bit on my plate so I'll probably leave that to the students until at least the summer semester. Then I could probly have more FUN with that site than the departmental pages.
There are some other pretty good benifits to the job, too. As the new senior Computer Lab Technician, I get to radically customize the lab office computers as I see fit. WHOOT! That is so much fun! I also get my own account plus the root password to two Linux systems operating in a semi-production environment, one of which I have free reign to play with as long as I keep it operational and don't let it interfere with the network. Then there are all the copies of Linux laying around, a pretty good Net connection, and a CD burner. You can probly see where that will lead. And a recent development, an instructor got some free sample OS and Linux course textbooks from publishing companies. All the unused ones were given to me along with the unopened CD's. I've ended up with a Mandrake 7.2 CD among the lot. I was also informed that since my job description includes doing research for course materials, I can validly ask publishing companies to send me sample books and CD related to and subject taught in the labs or which may be taught in the labs in the future (such as one's I might suggest after looking at the materials). I love my new job! |
