When, in the assighnment, they say "through Manhattan," through means "up to and including." - she's trying to get you to read the work closely enough to see if you can fallow what he did, when, and where; and letting you do something a bit more creative with it. Why the baby-talk (use color-coded astr... bah!)? Because half the people in your class can't function at a higher level. Laugh quietly to yourself, they'll be your wage-slave someday.
