I didn't say you have to not like them - I liked a lot of the books we had to read, and, around here, you're not odd if you like reading - in fact, you're odd if you don't. Also, many of the people around here know a lot about non-fantasy books, as well.
There's some logic to having the teacher tell you what to read - that way, they can have read it and, like, TEACH it (this is, of course, in theory, not always in practice). Now, if some of my old teachers had said "Ok, we're going to read a Dickens, do you want to read _Tale of Two Cities_ or _David Copperfield_? Here's the plotlines of both, blah, blah," I would have appriciated it. We're not going to be able to read _Evil Guiness for Dummies_ in class, but it'd be nice to have a little choice, I agree.
Now, about your teacher. *sigh* Get used to it. You're in high school, right? Just... learn to write poetry and look like you're taking notes. Learn to sleep with your eyes open. Learn to question the validity and justification of every argument she makes with a valid and arguable counter-argument. Learn to FIND the holes she makes. Learn to force her to have evidence for every arguments she makes. And ace every test. :) |
