Only if you sign THIS one to MY professor, explaining that I didn't finish my paper because papers are "overrated."

BTW, I really do think that most of the books we're forced to read in school are overrated. I also think that they're a neccesary evil, and, yes, they do teach you something. Except A Separate Peace. I learned nothing from that book, and now, three and a half years later, still feel that it was a waste of my time.

Back to them teaching you something, though... When I read Siddhartha, I hated it - random changing of tense and person, babble about a religion and mythology I knew virtually nothing about, stupid plot and worthless moral... now I feel differently. In fact, it pops up in the weirdest places. I had someone explain the anime Lain (don't watch unless you want your head to hurt... lots) by parallelling it to Siddhartha, and I better understood both things. Even though I hated the book while reading it, I now appriciate it greatly.

As for Catcher... Still think it's overrrated, but I can say that reading a piece in first-person/ train of thought was a good way to work on my own writing (having an example of something that rediculously flowing keeps me from being stilted).

On a related note, I DO find something disturbing about being forced to read what someone has arbtrarily labled as "classics" and "neccesary reading." But, by having everyone forced to read the same things, and vaguely good things at that, it does help latter in life. If someone makes a refference to Romeo and Juliet or A Tale of Two Cities, you're expected to know what it is their talking about... and you're SOL if you don't. Even if they're nasty, keep on trucking through those required readings. If all goes well, you might appriciate it someday. At least that's what the teachers say.
