I am SOOOO fed up with people badmouthing by adiplomat2002-04-28 11:45:37
I know the feeling. by fredf 2002-04-28 14:29:31
This guy brings in a computer that wouldn't boot up. So, I yank the hard disk, run chkdsk and virus scan and found that he had some virus. So I called him and told him that was most likely the reason why it wasn't booting. He tells me, "you must have put that on there, because I just installed the newest version of McAfee two months ago." So I asked him if he had been keeping up to date with his virus definitions.

"I don't have to do that, my computer is brand new and I shouldn't have to tell it what to do, it should just do it."

I am somewhere now between mildly amused and pissed off because the guy is blaming me for putting a virus on his computer. So I tell him that you do have install new definitions and McAfee usually releases updates every Wednesday, and that a format and reinstall will be the fastest and cheapest way to get his computer back to him, and I need his restore disks.

So he comes in three hours later and asks to speak to me. I come out and say "Hi I'm the tech working on your computer." and reach out my hand. He looks me up and down, doesn't take my hand and says "I have a PHD and am a professor at the university." (I'm thinking "Yeah buster, if you were so smart, you wouldn't be bringing your computer to me !@#$%^&*!@#$."

When he sees that I could care less he says, "You know *insert ass's name here* PHD from the university." (Still no reaction from me, but inside I am ready to rip his head clean from his shoulders)

He goes on, "You said you needed my restore CD's. They are in this bag along with some other software I need you to install. I also need Eudora installed, but I don't have a CD for it."

"Well, we don't have a copy of that here, so..."

"What the f@$k am I paying you $55 an hour to do if you don't have the software I want installed."

"I'll do my best to accommodate your needs sir, but I don't have that software. If you can find a copy, then I will be more than willing to install it for you, but my hands are tied."

"Whatever, I guess I'll just have to do it myself." Then he turns and leaves.

I say "Thanks, I'll get to work on it as soon as I can."
and then walk away steaming myself.

So a few days later, I finish up his machine, everything works and I call him and leave a message that he can come pick it up. Then, Thursday, he come back with a laundry list of problems.

1. Can't find old documents
2. No favorites
3. No Eudora
4. Dial-up isn't working
5. Missing screws on case
6. Error on startup Realoak.cdrom not found in config.sys

I hate warranty work, but I take it back and put it on the bench.
His old documents were where I told him they were. (Not warranty)

His favorites just needed to be moved over to c:\windows\favorites. (not warranty)

Do I really need to say anything about Eudora? (Not warranty)

The screws I just replaced (My screw up so is warranty)

I had to take a line out of config.sys (My screw up so is warranty)

The kicker though, is the dial-up issue. I try to dial out, and I see an error that wasn't there when that computer left my bench last time. So I look in device manager and lo and behold, there is a conflict with a VPN adapter. So I end up removing both dial-up and the VPN and reinstall the dial-up adapter.

Now, for the part I am dreading. I call him up to tell him that most of his issues weren't warranty work and that he owes another $55 for the hour I spent fixing what he had broke.

I call him up and his wife answers. She is really rude, but I won't replay that conversation. So he calls the next day, and when I tell him what the issues were, he starts blaming me for everything. First, the virus, then the VPN (Why would I install VPN software after he had already screwed it up?!?!), then saying that I had hidden all his files.

I am getting angry now, so I tell him, he has two choices, either pay $55 for what I fixed, or I can put it back to where it was before he brought it in for warranty work.

He is still pissed, but decided that I have the upper hand and backs down.

That is only my most recent one. I could probably write a book about all the jerk customers I've had. ;)
