I'm probably one of a few that fall under this... I have a developmental disability that is also considered a neurological disability and a mental handicap... I'm ok as far as starting a thread goes(kinda indiffrent actually)... as for history I went through being lab ratted from age 4... at age 6 they said MBD (aka minimal brain dysfunction) which was the catch all phrase of the time because I spoke, could be cuddly, and didn't head bang(otherwise I met the kanners syndrome criteria). As a teen I think my parents might of been told... but it wasn't til after my sons stuff and wanting to know if there were others out there like me(as I felt very alone) I got rediagnosed. First the doc said ADD then several other docs after that said I'm not even remotely ADD I am definitly HFA(high functioning autistic) or Aspergers. I meet enough criteria for autism though that I fall into HFA. I've had my sons psychologist, his developmental peditrician, my shrink, and a mental health psychologist all say I'm autistic. However to meet me I've learned to cope reasonable so I don't think anything sticks out(though some might find me eccentric). In small groups I do fine but large crowds I don't take well(I tend to overload and loose language amoungst other things). I like quiet mellow spots... I have CAPD(central auditory processing disorder), some figured aphasia(from a stroke I had when younger), I'm a visual thinker, etc. My boyfriend also thinks I have dyslexia which is a possiblity as my grandfather on my mom side and a few other relatives have had it.
Now as for coping skills... I had to learn to cope because otherwise life was hell... I'm still learning the odd slang phrase but at my age now know most and have enough life experience I grasp various things... somethings though admittedly I don't get or at least not at the time, which some people may well understand. I have problems sometimes with words as I know what a group of words means but ask me the meaning of a specific word in that group and I might not be able to say what it means. Some found amusement when I'd ask what various words ment so I learned to not ask... now I've learned its ok to ask again... that the people that know me wont be mean when answering or think its some joke that I asked.
I have somethings on my dx and coping skills on my webpage. I've been asked to consult on the odd confrence in past times and also even by my own doc on something once. I've also had things I've written published in the odd autism newsletter in various places. I've not said much on the lists for a bit(but I am on one list of parents and people with it at the moment) and I don't do speaking at confrences though I've been asked a few times. I've written one book that was on ADD/ADHD for very young children (due to my own kids ages at the time and my sons prior dx of ADHD at the time). Though I was asked to publish it I refused instead I gave the Developmental society here free reign to copy it and to distribute it free to families in a circumstance that would need it. I didn't wish to profit from it and also I know its expensive dealing with extra needs of some kids so I wanted them to have free access to it. I also off and on for 4 yrs ran various webpages with resources for the disabled (particularly autism and ADD). Not doing it at the moment as it takes alot of work.
