It stands for 'Molecular Detachment' device. It causes molecules to dissociate from one another, and works as a chain reaction on all new molecules it encounters. It's a field effect, caused by the intersection of two beams, and once all of the molecules in the area have been dissociated the field dissipatess, allowing the molecules to reform in various random ways (which means they generally form large lumps of fairly basic compounds). It's considered to be a starship-tostarship weapon. Ender is the one who decides to turn it on a planet -- the Bugs' homeworld.
