A reference to the fact that musicians don't typically earn as much money as regular folks. The joke is the typical "3 people standing in line to get into Heaven" formula, where the first two are businessmen/doctors/lawyers/etc who state that they earned lots of money and donated it to charity and St Peter lets him in, and the third looks ashamed as he says "I only earned $5000 my entire lifetime" whereupon St Peter responds with the punchline.
