I think your equation will only work in cases where s1+s2=1/2 the sphere's circumference. The surface area of a spherical triangle = r2(A+B+C-pi). In your example, A+B=pi, so your area is C*r2. For your equation to work, (s1+s2)/pi must equal r, which it does only if s1+s2=1/2(2*pi*r). Hope I'm not missing anything...
