So the device /dev/sda is there.

Maybe there is someting fishy with the partition table or the filesystem ?

Does cfdisk /dev/sda show anyting ?

You could also try if fsck /dev/sda1 gets any results.

Also, I get JAZ - Disks from other people now and then. Sometimes the Data is on /dev/sdX1, sometimes on /dev/sdX4, I haven't figured out a sheme behind it yet. They all use NT4 machines and haven't anything configured different as far as I can tell. So you could try mounting /dev/sda2,3,4,5,6,7 and so on just for fun.
