Well, I DO like epic sci-fi stories, but it all depends on the presentation.
I am aware that Macross is pretty old, and you may call me spoiled, but the awful animation, the clichéed story and the endless repetition of 2-3 Minmay songs is NOT my idea of good presentation...
The comparison may not really be fair, because of the huge age difference, but for a true epic in perfect presentation I'd nominate Seikai no Monshou (and the Seikai no Senki followups)

For some background, my first introduction to anime propably was that 'Heidi' series, even though I had no idea what anime was at that time. My first anime that I actually percieved as such must have been Ranma 1/2, airing during the summer break on a french TV station (which we could pick up living just across the border in Germany) when I was in my early mid-teens - and despite the fact is was in french dub and my bad grasp of the french language (meaning I understood barely half of what was going on) I still was ROTFLing plenty ^_^
