Total Macbeth info... by DinaFelice 2002-03-20 22:31:28
It is bad luck to say it in a theater or on a stage when you are perfoming any other show besides Macbeth. In addition, there is no consensus on whether it is bad luck to say it while doing theatre related things while not in a theater.

The reason for the bad luck is usually attributed to one of several sources:

1-Shakespeare used an actual curse for the spell the witches say.
2-Shakespeare used an actual spell so real witches got pissed and cursed the show.
3-Shakespeare did not use an actual spell, but witches got annoyed that he didn't take the trouble to find one/didn't ask for permission to make fun of them so they cursed the show.

Some samples of "Proof" that the curse is real:

-In the first ever production, the man (yes, MAN) playing Lady Macbeth got killed when scenery fell on him...he was onstage at the time.
-During one performance (probably in the 1800's), they used swords with intricate, heavy blades. During a swordfight, one of the blades fell off the handle and smashed the knee of the actor who played Macbeth. The show must go on and his 'pained' performance was so suited to the Macbeth character that it made his career (though his knee was never the same).
-During a performance in Central Park (New York City), a homeless man wandered onto the stage and collapsed. Since it was during a battle scene, no one in the audience knew anything was wrong until the ambulance arrived.
-Numerous people involved in Macbeth productions have met untimely deaths.
