If you lose your planner, all your schedules, contact information, etc. have to be completely recreated from scratch. The costs of a new planner are nothing compared to the costs of the time of re-entering all that information.
By contrast, if I lose/break my Palm IIIx, it'll cost me about $120 on e-bay to replace, but one hotsync (~5 minutes) and my handheld is in the exact same state as it was the last time I synchronized.
I guarantee you that the $120 + next-day shipping is less expensive than the downtime incurred by re-creating all the information in your pen & paper planner.
